Hello! My name is John Olbrantz and I am director of the Hallie Ford Museum of Art at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. I’m delighted to find this Bicknell family website as I recently wrote a major book on the Scottish artist and traveler David Roberts (1796-1864) and have wanted to connect with David Robert’s daughter Christine Roberts Bicknell’s descendants for some time.

I have been interested in David Roberts for 44+ years and am delighted that I was finally able to bring the exhibition and book to fruition.
As an aside, we’re hoping to travel the David Roberts exhibition nationally beginning in 2026 under the auspices of International Arts and Artists, a traveling exhibition service based in Washington, DC. And, I’m planning a trip to the UK this September to work on an archaeological dig at Vindolanda near Hadrian’s Wall, but when I’m not working at the site, I plan to visit Roberts’s home at 7 Fitzroy Street in London and his final resting place in West Norwood Cemetery, where he’s buried next to his friend and Christine’s father-in-law Elahanan Bicknell, and spend a few days in Edinburgh where I want to visit his birthplace in Stockbridge and review his archives at the National Library of Scotland.
I hope I haven’t bored you with a lot of information you might not be interested in, but I’m thrilled to have found this website and delighted I could share my passion and enthusiasm for David Roberts with you. Take care.

I have long been intrigued by the few stories my father and aunt told of our family history: that someone came to the colony near the time of the Mayflower; a many great great uncle of my father allegedly had his nose shot off at Bunker or Breed's Hill in Boston at the start of the Revolution. Several towns in the U.S. are named Bicknell (in Indiana and Utah) and I once invoked heavy sighs from my young daughter by a side trip to Bicknell, IN which was a deteriorating Midwest town with a nice library and ice cream shop.
I cannot thank you enough, I cannot describe the excitement I feel on finding the memoir of William Bicknell. My husband is a direct descendant of his sister Sarah Bicknell who married John Walter Langton. oh Joy!!

Would love to see photos of the Bicknells who settled in Madison Maine. I’m originally from Windham, Maine. The Bicknells in Madison would be my fathers grandparents - John Randall Bicknell, his father John S Bicknell and their families or even photos of their homes.
My great grandmother, Ada Bicknell, born 1872, Southsea, Hampshire immigrated to Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada in 1910. Passed at Niagara Falls in 1955

This is my Great-Great Grandpa. Edith & Walter sailed from Torquay, UK in May 1890 on the SS Majestic.
Walter was a Potter, sculpturer, stone cutter & a Sgt. in the Royal Artillary during 1879 – 1889.
And then worked for the railroad in Laramie & Denver.
