I believe I decend from Walter and Edith BICKNELL Withycombe, Devon, England.
This is my Great-Great Grandpa. Edith & Walter sailed from Torquay, UK in May 1890 on the SS Majestic.
Walter was a Potter, sculpturer, stone cutter & a Sgt. in the Royal Artillary during 1879 – 1889.
And then worked for the railroad in Laramie & Denver.

Comment: Hello ! I have only recently begun to research my Great Grandfather’s family. His name was Joel Frank(lin)? Bicknell, born 14 Feb 1890 in Muncie, Indiana. Just this week I ran into a Bicknell relative on Ancestry and he told me about having attended Family Reunions in Bicknell, Indiana! I had known there was a town by this name, but never had any idea of a connection to the family. This new friend told me about Vera Reeve compiling a “book” of the genealogy of the Bicknell family. I am wondering if that publication is available to peruse and garner some family history from. This is all very exciting to me. I’m always happy to make connections!

When Valerie Lester was researching Clarence’s bio MARVELS (https://clarencebicknell.com/shop/) she and her researchers found no link. The Bicknell Family Association (www.bicknell.net) has just started a YDNA-38 programme but for the moment we have not found any participants in the Charles Bicknell/Maria Constable line. There is no even a “possible link” yet. Maybe the names are coincidental. Maybe in the future we will find a link. Do please let me know what else you discover. I, like you, find it strange that two contemporary art supremos did not know each other. However, a) Constable painted in a classic romantic style while Elhanan saught out contemporary paintings like Turner. If you know these two poles in the present art world you will know that there is mutual disdain and always has been! b) “CONSTABLE’S pictures… never became sought for or valuable during his life” (https://www.bicknell.net/books/as1912/5_farnham.htm Five Pedigrees by Algenron Sidney Bicknell) so Elhanan would not even have known about him, let alone thinking of him as an artist to sponsor or invest in; c) Constable and Maria were country people and would not have bumped into Elhanan or his crowd socially; d) what would Ruskin, Elhanan’s maverick if trusted neighbour have throught of Constable for heaven’s sake? I have copied Turner expert Selby Whittingham in case he can ad some intell. I think we will find that Del Bicknell is a Farnham Bicknell and that he is related to Maria Constable. But (correct me if I am wrong Del) the jury is out.

Comment: I am very interested in generational ties. I have been doing some work with my church and discovered that generational things get passed down. Comment: Lovely to find the Bicknell family blog! My 4th great-grandmother was Mary “Polly” Bicknel (yes: spelled with only one “l”) and she lived in the Granby/Colrain, MA area from about 1758 until her death there in 1832. Polly married Aaron Coy and his line is descended from William Brewster of Mayflower reknown. I have been unable to find Mary’s birth record or any clues as to her Bicknel/l parents’ identities and I would like to have that document in the Mayflower Society’s records. I do know that she married Aaron Coy on the 19th of June 1787 in Somers, CT (she is listed as “of Somers” at the time). I have visited her grave in Colrain, where she is listed as “Polly Coy.” I welcome any clues that might help me tie her to her Bicknel/l family roots.

Reply from The Bicknell Association: A team of 10 Expert Bicknell Family Genealogists has started work on a Joint project to bring all of the family history together into one large tree. There are currently over 30 thousand people in this tree and it will take several weeks before the team has checked for errors. I love doing my family history and back to the 1600’s in Puckington Somerset, near Barrington. I am now working on my ancestors through DNA, very new to it and learning something new every day. My tree is on Ancestry and done my DNA through Ancestry and also uploaded it to Gedmatch. My Gedmatch number is AF9518406.
I am happy to help anyone with researching their family history and would love to find some more of my distant cousins through DNA.
Where I live I look out at Beacon Hill and not too far from Bickenhall. So happy to do grave/house scenic photos as long as local to me.

My gg grandmother Electa Stowell’s 2nd husband was John Calhoun Becknell, originally from Missouri, who lived in Red River County, Texas and then moved to Mariposa County, California in the early 1850’s and got with my gg grandmother after/during her first marriage to Joseph Morris Sr., my gg grandfather. John Calhoun’s father was Alexander Becknell and his father was Micajah Bicknell and so forth back to the “emmigrant” Zachariah Bicknell, who died in the early 1600’s in Massachusetts. Comment: I have been clearing out a deceased estate, that of Bernard Bicknell, in Cashmere, Christchurch, New Zealand. He left a pipe organ and a quantity of organ music in his will to my Organ Museum, and amongst the music is a fair amount of family papers and history. Bernard’s grandfather was Postmaster of Oamaru in the 1860s and 1870s, and was born in Tooting in 1842. He married an Armstrong of Kilmore in 1855, and had eleven children. Herman Bicknell was an accountant in Christchurch and Bernard succeeded to his business. There is a framed coloured lithograph of St. Nicholas’s church in Tooting dated 1832, the architect’s view of what their new church was going to look like. If any Bicknell’s are interested in the family history they are welcome to contact me.

For anyone doing research here and wanting answers, please give as much info as possible, i.e. dates, places etc.
There is more than one John or Zachary for example. Second, it seems to be the concensus that there is a “Northern Bicknell line and a “Southern Bicknell line.
The Northern started by Zachary Bicknell and the Southern by William Clark Bicknell of Virginia. I come from the southern branch. The 1913 Thomas Bicknell book is great but Vera Reeves from Indiana also wrote 2 editions on the southern branch. I have these books.
I am looking for a book by Judge Johnson Hayes called “The Land of Wilkes” a book about Wilkes Co, NC that is said to have early Bicknell Information. The southern branch spelled their name both Bicknell/Becknell. William Clark’s wife was Hannah Rosanna Cash and here family’s line goes down to Singer Johnny Cash.
